── for a friend whose birthday coincides with the first day of spring

wide-awake with excitement at midnight

she recounts over the phone

the candles with flickering green flames

that surround all the lakes and ponds of the world

I remind her

not to forget the best wishes

that light up one after another

in my joyous heart
