Love Song

Zi Chuan’s Poetry

I don't know where the reed catkins have floated

Reflected in the water, the grey yellow reedsdesolate

have become thinner with their withered leaves

The Autumn wind starts, stops and starts again

It reminds me of a girl with her two plaits swinging

long ago, singing a love song “Pulling out a Reed Flower”

Now an old lady, with her grandson, appears in front of me

She looks at me blankly for a moment, and then

she starts to smile, saying “ Aren’t you Rong Cai?

Wow, you look old, too!”

The little boy, gripping his grandmother's hand, looks at me

curiously, with a particularly alert look in his eyes

He does not know that this is the place where I once lived,

nor that “Pulling out a Reed Flower”, a love song that

his grandmother sang for me long ago
